課程概述

*This course is taught in Chinese.

This course aims to introduce graduate students to the writing of academic journal papers so as to enable them to communicate effectively their research to a diverse audience. This course starts with considerations of academic writing style and organization, then moves towards essential writing components that lay the foundation for research paper writing, and culminates in sectional developments and features of research papers published in academic journals. Along with lectures and discussions, in-class writing exercises, post-class writing and reading tasks, and take home assignments will be given to students to strengthen their understanding of the course content. Classroom activity is designed to facilitate both individual and collaborative learning of students .

COURSE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (CILOs)
By the end of the course, students will achieve the following learning outcomes:
CILO 1: Identifying features of English academic writing
CILO 2: Recognizing the moves and steps in constructing research papers
CILO 3: Organizing their ideas into a logical and coherent text
CILO 4: Developing critical reading and writing skills
CILO 5: Developing proof-reading and self-editing skills
CILO 6: Making effective written presentations of their work 
課程要求
1. Students should attend all classes (physical and online).
• Leave of absence from should be required via email.
• Each unexcused leave of absence takes away 2 GPA points.
• Each late arrival takes away 1 GPA point.
• Students should turn on the camera if synchronous online classes are to be given.

2. Students should actively participate in classroom activity.
• Participation includes coming to class fully prepared, paying full attention to lectures, discussing with teammates and giving feedback to one another, collaborating with teammates to complete learning tasks, completing assigned reading and writing tasks, asking questions to clear confusion of whatsoever, and answering questions given by the course instructor to enhance student-teacher interaction.

3. Students should complete take-home and in-class writing assignments that are carefully scheduled as stages towards the fulfillment of the course aim.
• There are five take-home assignments.
– A1 is a team assignment of 1000-1200 words.
– A2 is an individual assignment of 200-250 words.
– A3 is an individual assignment where students analyze an abstract and write an abstract of 100-150 words.
– A4 is an individual assignment where students orally present their paper analyses and submit their analysis reports (I).
– A5 is an individual assignment where students orally present their paper analyses and submit their analysis reports (MRD).
• Assignments should be submitted on time.
• Late assignments will receive a B- (1 week late) or a zero (2+ weeks late).
• Receiving a zero on any of the assignments guarantees course failure.
• Failing to fulfill assignment requirements automatically reduces one’s grade to a lower letter, e.g. fom A- to B+.

4. Students should take the three evaluation tests.
• If students cannot take the tests as scheduled, make-up tests are available and there will be a 20% reduction in the score.
